It's pretty much the same over here, really. Mayors usually get to go to lots of big dinners though, so it does have its perks. You will probably have to kiss lots of babies too, though.

I didn't make it onto the ferry - the folks I stayed with seemed to think of Belfast as a giant war zone from which no traveller returns and warned me off. Maybe next time!

Oh, I don't think Belfast is that bad these days! It was bad in the 70's, but not any more. A very good reason to return to Ireland, though, or alternatively, maybe a vacation to England, Scotland and Wales next time.

Haven't been to any conventions in Seattle, but I suspect they're very similar: role-playing and board games, and a lot of nerds playing Magic: the Gathering.
